Happy Birthday, Madeline L. Sweet Madeline brought cupcakes to share with the class on Wednesday to celebrate her birthday!!

Planet Research!!!

Each afternoon , we have worked on learning about the planets in our solar system.
Each child was assigned a planet to research.
They had a sheet of questrions they were responsible for answering.
The boys and girls used the internet and books to help them. Due to the weather, I am going to let them bring their stuff home this weekend to work on some. I will try to give them some class time on Tuesday as well. This project was due this Friday, but now it will not be due until next Wednesday. However, 5 of them have already finished!

Needed!

Our field trip money to the Space and Rocket Center is due THIS FRIDAY!!!! It is $20.00 for children and $22.00 for parents! These payments must be separate. Parent money must be cash and in an envelope labeled "Mary Laney." Student money can be a check (made payable to JHES) or cash.
This trip is Friday, February 25.

MULTIPLICATION

Tuesday's TEST includes our 0's, 1's, 2's, 5's, 9's, 10's, and 11's!!!!
Those 9's can stump you!!!
Keep up the good work and study!!!!

Geometry

The boys and girls are doing great with geometry! I keep trying to stress to them, if they learn the vocabulary of geometry, they will do great!!! Please encourage your child to review these terms nightly. Next week, we will take a break from geometry and focus on our 3, 4, and 6's in multiplication. The following week, we will be learning a lot more vocabulary words when we start learning about polygons, triangles, and angles.

Our New Unit in IMAGINE IT!

Our first story in our new unit was "The Sun." It was an expository text with lots of important information. To help us better understand this selection, we did some classifying and catergorizing activities.
We also spent a lot of time going over the selection's vocabulary words.
The boys and girls were making a booklet of this week's words to help them study.

More Earth Materials

This week we spent time observing different kinds of rocks. To figure out what kind of minerals are in of them, we preformed a vinegar test (a weak acid).
We know that Calcite (a mineral) reacts to vinegar by bubbling and fizzing! Therefore, we were testing each one of our rocks (Sandstone, Basalt, Marble, and Limestone) by pouring vinegar on them. If our rock responded to the vinegar, we then assumed it had Calcite in it.
Our room smells like we are dying Easter eggs instead of science!

Student of the Month

Congratulations, WILLIAM TAYLOR!!!! William received the Student of the Month Award for INITIATIVE!

Geometry

We started our Geometry Unit with a little sorting activity yesterday. The children were given 12 solid figures. They had to come up with a way to sort them into two groups. The only rule was that every solid figure had to belong to a group.
One group sorted them by roll vs. cannot roll.

Another group sorted their solid figures by points vs. no points.

There were a lot of creative ways to sort them.

Observing Crystals

On Friday of last week, we poured the liquid from our vials that sat over night into evaporation dishes to see if we could find any other ingredients in our mock rocks that are not visible to the eye. Through evaporation we were hoping to discover the other ingredients.Monday, the children were so excited to find CRYSTALS!!!
Using a crystal identification sheet, the children were able to figure out what other ingredients were in our mock rocks.

Ingredients of our mock rocks: red and green gravel (pretend minerals), oyster shells (pretend minerals), alum, epsom salt, flour, and sand!

Love

Have I told you all how much I love my class, lately? Well, I do!
They are the BOMB!
Thank you for sharing them with me!!!

Study!!!

This week's timed test will cover our 0's, 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's! The boys and girls will have 3 minutes to answer 50 problems.
We will be learning our 9's and 11's this week!!!
STUDY PLEASE!!!!

Earth Materials Unit

We opened up our unit on Earth Materials with "Mock" rocks. Yes, these are homemade rocks!
The students measured them, weighed them, and took them apart!

We learned that rocks are earth materials made up of more than one ingredient. Our job was to separate all the different ingredients that made up our mock rocks!
They found red and green gravel, shells, and lots of powdery material.
We wanted to see if we could separate the powder material anymore, so we added it to water. We did a lot of shaking before we let it settle overnight.

Shake! Shake! Shake!

You will have to ask your child what he/she observed the next morning!

School Tomorrow at 10:00

School will be back in session tomorrow with a delayed start. Please be extremely careful making your way to Julian Harris. I look forward to seeing my sweet students!

I will send home a revised schedule of the "Where We Are Heading This Month" that was attached to your child's report card last Friday. Pretty much everything will just be pushed back one week. There will be no tests this FRIDAY!!!

Since my newsletter would not make sense to you now for this week, I just junked it! I will send one home next Tuesday since we are out on Monday for MLK. Also, do not expect any graded papers coming home anytime soon either. Wow, this is crazy!!!!

I hope you all have enjoyed the snow!

Student of the Month for Achievement

Garrett Free Way to go, Garrett! You are one BRIGHT boy!!

Hundreds Charts

We spent two days using hundred charts to help us skip count by 2's, 3's, 4's ......12's.
When the boys and girls finished coloring in their charts, we spent some time looking for patterns and trying to explain them.

Playing Around With Multiplication

Last week, we read this book and made our own lists of things that come in 2's, 3's, 4's,.....12's. They worked in groups and came up with some creative things.
We then took these lists to create our own multiplication problems. We used words, pictures, and numbers to answer our problems.
They did a great job with this!!
