Proud Mom!

Yesterday, I took the morning off to go to Leon Sheffield to watch Patton receive the Student of the Month Award for RESPECT! He had no idea about the award, nor did he have a clue we were all going to be there(parents and grandparents)! It was a fun morning!

I am so proud of my baby!!!!

Study!

The past two days we have discussed congruency and movement. We first determined if two shapes were congruent and then we determined if the shapes had changed direction by sliding, flipping, or turning. We also learned about symmetry this week. We will have a geometry test a week from Tuesday. Encourage your child to study the vocabulary in this unit! Tomorrow is our reading/vocabulary test. I will make sure everyone brings home their Imagine It! books tonight. They have their vocabulary words and definitions in their BEE books.
Please encourage your child to reread this week's story tonight at home. Ask him/her about it!

Don't forget to study spelling and DOL tonight, too. We will be taking a short grammar test on verbs and their tenses as well.

More Geometry: Polygons and Quadrilaterals

Review these vocabulary words at home with your child. Ask them to tell you the definition of a POLYGON. Then ask them if a square is a polygon? A heart? We also talked about how polygons are named by how many sides it has: triangle-3, quadrilateral - 4, pentagon-5, hexagon-6, etc.
Lastly, we learned about quadrilaterals: Trapezoid, parallelogram, rhombus, square and rectangle.

More Geometry: Tangrams

Today we read I read this story to the class. As I read the story, the children made the animals from the tale using TANGRAMS!Mr. David made us a gigantic set of tangrams out of felt for the children to play with during workshop time.

During the story, the children used individual sets to create the animals from the tale.

What animal is this? A squirrel!

This is a picture of the squirrel from the book.

The children had a great time exploring with their TANGRAMS today.

This Weekend: Baseball Tryouts

Can you believe it is BASEBALL season again? We spent Saturday afternoon at the ballfields for baseball tryouts. Patton and I spent most of the time in the car because it was so cold.
Smith is so excited to be out on the field! He loves baseball!
He takes this sport very seriously!
Here is Mr. David watching carefully.
Here is my goof ball! Really, he was just freezing!
It was a fun afternoon!

The Greedy Triangle

Today we read The Greedy Triangle. As we read the story, the children used toothpicks and marshmallows to make shapes. They did a fabulous job with this activity. It was fun!
We made hexagons.

Here is the original triangle we started out and ended with in the story.

Today we studied TRIANGLES: Equilateral, Isoceles, and Scalene
Review at home please. Vocabulary is IMPORTANT!

Twizzlers and Angles

Today we read the book, Twizzlers: The Book of Angles, Shapes, and Patterns. As I read the book, the children made angles, shapes, and patterns with their Twizzlers. It was so fun!!! Hannah made a triangle with 3 ACUTE angles.
Logan made an ACUTE angle.

Shelbie made an OBTUSE Angle.
Preston made and OBTUSE Angle.

Ask your child to explain the difference between an right, acute, and obtuse triangle.

We started Geometry this week. The children are LOVING it. I think they are just excited about not having to add, subtract, or multiply for once! I have stressed to the students that the most important about geometry is the vocabulary. If they know the vocabulary, they will do fine!
Yesterday, we worked on lines and line segments. Please review these highlighted words with your child at home.

Fluency Practice

This week we have spent some time working on fluency and comprehension. We have silent read, partner read, and choral read. The boys and girls have done a really good job with this. Our benchmark for DIBELS at the end of the year is 110 words per minute.

Valentine's Party

The children had a great time making ice cream sundaes and passing out Valentine's. My camera battery died, so I had to get Ms. Hardison to take some pictures for my blog.

Thank you to all the parents who made this party possible! You are awesome!

You Can Do It Papa!

This is where my daddy goes every Monday for his chemotherapy. Today, we decided to pop in and surprise him! Hopefully, he only has 2 more treatments!!! We even surprised Nana. She did not know we were coming.
I do not think Papa knew what to say! We were just excited the nurses let us break the rules because usually they only let each patient have one visitor at a time. WHO could turn down this group!
The children waited anxiously to walk back and surprise Papa!
These are the t-shirts we had made to wear today.
We had Nana one made to and gave it to her when we got there. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. He has had a rough weekend, but doing much better.
Tonight, we are all eating dinner with him at his house. Having his grandchildren around, always seems to help his spirits.

Miss Coggins

We have been blessed with a student from Athens, Miss Coggins, the past six days. She has been with us to observe and help out. We are going to hate telling her good-bye on Tuesday. She has been wonderful! She even baked the class red velvet cupcakes for Valentine's Day! WE WILL MISS YOU, MISS COGGINS! Thanks for everything!

Happy Birthday Will!

On Thursday, Will brought chocolate-covered donuts to share with the class. The boys and girls loved them. Thanks, Will, for sharing your birthday with us!

Mrs. Coon Survived!

This weekend, I went to Birmingham to run the Mercedes 1/2 marathon with my brother and my hubby! We had a wonderful time! This was the best part of the whole race. My brother could not quit laughing. He has never had a massage before! I made him do it!
He is still cracking up! You can see I am laid out!

This my brother and I at the finish line! I am so proud of him!

This is me with our dear friend, Patrick Rasco. My boys call him "Uncle Patrick." This was his best race!

My brother and David comparing times and paces. Why do men have to be so competitive? All I care about is getting to the finish line!

This was my brother's first 1/2 marathon! He was so proud to finish. The past 3 weeks he has been recovering from a hurt leg, so he wasn't sure he would even be able to finish! He did it, and felt great! We ran about the first 8 miles together. It was a lot of fun! He finished in 2 hours flat!!

Here I am finishing up. I beat my last year's time, but it was not my fastest half marathon. That is okay, because all that matters is that I had a blast!!!!
I finished in 1hour and 56minutes.

Here is Mr. David at the finished line. He finished in 1hour and 35minutes. A whole 20 minutes before me! He is so excited because this is his fastest half marathon pace.

Here we are! My brother, David, Cheryl (my sister-in-law), and I wore Lance Armstrong "Livestrong" shirts for Cancer Awareness. We did this for my daddy! He was suppose to be at the race, but instead ended up in the hospital for dehydration. We were sad he did not make the trip, but we took lots of pictures for him!

This is the Decatur GANG that ran. This is US at the Sheraton before we headed to the start line. Our group was a lot smaller this year because of injuries, but we still had a crowd!
It was a wonderful weekend with family and friends!
I hope you and your family have had a wonderful weekend! Enjoy having Monday off!
