FYI

I will be leaving school tomorrow at 11:30 to go unpack some BOXES. My parents recently . their house. Because of daddy's health, they decided to move into a smaller house with a lot less upkeep. Well, tomorrow is the BIG DAY, moving day! Therefore, I am going to go help them out after I get things going at school with my kiddos. My sub Jennifer Blevins, an awesome substitute and friend, will be watching over my class. Please know that they are in wondeful hands.

Please say a little prayer for my parents as they make this transition. Thanks so much.

August is a popular birthday month!

Today we celebrated Abbey's and Jairus's birthdays with some yummy chocolate cupcakes. Abbey's birthday was Monday and Jairus celebrated his birthday today!

Math

Our goal this week in math is to learn how to round to the nearest ten and to the nearest hundred. They did a great job rounding to nearest ten today!!!

Reading

This week's story is about a child moving from Korea to the United States. With this story, we will be comparing and contrasting Korea and America. We will also talk about the author's point of view, first person!
This story introduces a lot of new vocabulary words. This test will be on Friday.

Science

We have been talking about joints this week. The three kinds of joints are the hinge joint (ex. knee), the ball -and-socket joint (ex. shoulder), and the gliding joint (ex.wrist). We used model chicken and rodent bones to study joints. We were able to observe the hinge joint and the ball-and-socket joint.
Encourage your child to keep good notes and to stay up to date in their science packets. Both of these will be great resources for our unit test next Wednesday.

This was the scene in my room today....

The boys and girls were shocked to see me in my "Beat Austin" tee today. They had no idea I went to Decatur High School. I also had to explain to them that I live on the other side of the tracks!! Go RED RAIDERS!!!

Kaitlin's Birthday

Kaitlin and her mom made cupcakes to share with the class today after lunch.
Happy Birthday, sweet girl!!!

Our Opposable Thumb

Today in Science we talked about how important our thumbs are to us! To experience life without our thumbs, we helped each other tape down our thumbs.

Once our thumbs were taped, we worked on completing some tasks without them: coloring, holding a pencil, tying shoes, doing a maze, etc.
They thought this experiment was absolutely hilarious!

Standard Form, Word Form, and Expanded Form

Wow! This place value stuff in math is about to wear us all out! Finally today, I felt like the boys and girls started to get it! Here, Ashley is helping Madeline figure out how to change a number from standard form to expanded form.
This week, we have spent a lot of time dealing with numbers in the hundred thousands! Practice saying these greater numbers correctly, writing them in word form, and taking them from standard form to expanded form or vice-versa!

STUDY!

Sorry I am so late posting, but I couldn't get this thing to work right! Anyway, Have you studied? Tomorrow is a big test day! We have a spelling test, a reading/vocabulary test, a DOL quiz, and a Math 4 Today assessment.

Today's language test was a success today! GO COON DOGS!! You did very well!

Order Your Field Trip T-shirt

Not to brag, but I am quite proud of our 3rd grade t-shirts this year because I am the one that came up with the design on the front. I wanted the "Life Is Good" look, and it turned out way cuter than I ever thought! Please try to get one so we can all match when we are out and about as a class. This money is due Thursday, September 2!

Book Order

A new book order came home today! This order form and money is due September 7. Please note that when you order books, I am able to get FREE books for our classroom library! I appreciate your help!
Those of you that ordered last time should have received your books today!
Tomorrow is our first Language TEST! Review UNIT 1! This test will cover the 4 kinds of sentences, subjects and predicates, and correcting run-on sentences.

"The Legend of Damas and Pythias"

This week's story is a play. Today, I assigned the students parts as we read as we read it aloud. They did a super job using lots of expression!
This play fits in great with our frienship unit!!

More Fun at the Store

Our second time to the store was a success! The boys and girls had a wonderful time spending their money! Thank you to those that sent in items for the store. Also, thank you to those that were able to work it. We couldn't do this without you awesome parents. Adrien was our cashier this week.
Jonah was our banker.
Madeline purchasing her goodies.
There were so many items to choose from. The boys and girls had a hard time deciding.
Thanks Mary Laney and Laura Berry for running the show this week!!!

Little Late!

My sweet husband just gave me the camera that he used on the first day of school. He was given strict instructions from me since I was not able to go with them. Patton is a big fifth grader and Smith is a third grader. Both boys attend Leon Sheffield Elementary.
This is Smith with his beautiful teacher, Mrs. Wakefield! She is amazing!

Patton had to report to Patrol Duty on the first day of school. Mr. David did not want to hang around, so therefore I did not get a picture with Patton and his teacher, Mrs. Orr. Ugh....
