Proud Moment

Smith made The Decatur Daily. It was an article about him helping out with the morning news show at Leon Sheffield.

Pet Care #2

Lulu helping with a spelling test.
She is worn out!
Ready for another school day.
A dear friend made these hedgehog cookies for my class in anticipation of a new classroom pet.  Yes, a hedgehog is in the works.
They were so yummy!
We made a list about caring for a hedgehog while we ate our cookies.

My Football Player

As a mom, I just had to post some pictures of my sweet boy during his last football game as 7th grader at Oak Park Middle School.

I never would have thought he would've made it through the season, but he proved me wrong! I am so proud of him for hanging in there!!!!

Mallard Farms

These children won at the SILENT AUCTION an afternoon at Mallard Farms with the Second Grade Teachers from Ben Davis.  It was a fun afternoon!!!

Author's Purpose

We focused on Author's Purpose with an emphasis on to entertain!

We read Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendlak.

The children wrote about how the author entertained them.

Pet Care for Fabulous Friday

I am teaching Pet Care for Fabulous Friday. LuLu, my Boston Terrier, is loving it because she gets to hang out at school with me each Friday.

She warmed right up to the kids.

This is my favorite picture!

We made pet rocks the first week. I sent the boys and girls home with a contract that had a checklist to follow to help them prove to their parents they could take care of a pet.

These rocks were to be bathed, petted, fed, played with, and loved all week.

Ch..ch..changes!

Our IB Unit is CHANGES, and boy do we have some changes going on in 2nd grade right now! First, Mrs. Hughes has chicken eggs in an incubator in her room. We went for a visit last Wednesday while she candled them (looking for good eggs to keep and bad eggs to discard). It was a neat experience for us all. I hate my picture of Mrs. Hughes with an egg is blurry. We should have some baby chicks this week!!!!!!

Next, we placed these capsules in a cup water on Tuesday and observed its changes every hour.

The children used pictures and words to report their findings.

We also still have a pumpkin in our room that we cut open 12 days ago. We are recording its changes as well. Yes, it is stinky!!!!

Building Towers

The boys and girls had a competition last Thursday. Each group was given a bucket of solids (rubber band, aluminum foil, cups, Popsicle sticks, straws, etc.) to create a tower. The rules required them to use all the materials and to create the tallest tower in a certain time period.

This group was the winner! They worked so well together! I saw a lot of teamwork!

I had a lot of disappointed children, but it was definitely a learning experience. We reflected on our experience to help us realize that working cooperatively takes a lot effort. It is a give and take mindset that is hard for second graders to grasp.
