A Busy Week in Second Grade

We started Math Workshop with our AMSTI curriculum.  The boys and girls explored with pattern blocks and cubes.

WOOF Words were introduced this week.  The boys and girls had their first vocabulary quiz on Friday.  They did FABULOUS!!  WOOF!

Look who was the first COONdog to BLING this year!  Way to go, Cole!!  You were a TOP dog!

We have spent a lot of time focusing on reading to ourselves.  Everyday we have tried to build our stamina.  We have made it a little over 4 minutes without any disturbances.  Our goal this week is to build to 10 minutes!  Can we do it?
Friday was our first POPCORN day!  Don't forget to send $.50 on Fridays if your child wants popcorn.
Now that we have been in 2nd grade for 2 weeks, we took time to compare and contrast first and second graders at Benjamin Davis.
The second store ran very smoothly on FRIDAY!  They are loving it!
I am so impressed by all the students who are saving their money.

 Decisions, decisions, decisions!

This picture just melts my heart!  It is too sweet!
Former Principal, Pam Assman, came to Benjamin Davis on Friday afternoon to teach the second graders sign language.
Our IB unit is Express Yourself!  We are focusing on Many, Varied, and Unusual Ways to Communicate.
The second grade teachers learned a lot, too!

WE HAD A WONDERFUL WEEK!!!

Time

Today, I introduced TIME ROUTINE. We discussed the difference between an analog and digital clocks.

After determining how the two clocks were different, we focused on telling time to the hour.

Daily 5

We Began Daily 5 this week! We are focusing on Read To Self right now. We are working on stamina! As of today, we read for 4 minutes with no disturbances. Our goal is 30 minutes!!!!

Each child has a book box with books that are "Just Right" for them.

They take their book boxes to their boom nook and "Read to Self."

They are doing great!!!

Spelling

Every Monday, we will meet in Mrs. Watkin's room with Mrs. Davis' class to come up with our spelling words for each week. This week's words revolve around the short a sound. After the first week, I will help the children compile their lists of words by selecting words from List 1 and/or List 2. This week I required my whole class to use List 1. This is for assessment purposes for me. Each week, the students will also be responsible for 5 sight words.

Their spelling words will be in their DOG book weekly. Tests begin this Friday!!!

GLYPH

All About Me Glyph
The boys and girls did a great job following directions.
They used a key to help them create a face about them!
We learned lots of information about one another through this activity!

Assessments

We have spent some time this week doing assessments to help Mrs. Coon know what she needs to focus on this year in 2nd grade.
The boys and girls are taking a math assessment.

How Many Letters Are in our Names?

Today, we read Chrysanthemum!  We talked about Chrysanthemum's name having 13 letters.  We wanted to know how many letters our names had.

We discovered that AdriAnna had the most letters in her name.  Most of the names in our class had  4 or 5 letters in them.  The boys' names totalled 48 letters, and the girls' names totalled 50.  We have 98 letters in all in our classroom.

Writer's Notebook

Working on our Writer's Notebooks was the highlight of our day!  They enjoyed this time so much!!!
