Comprehension Toolkit

We have enjoyed this week learning lots of NEW information from interesting non-fiction texts.

We learned about coral reefs, sharks, and dolphins all this week.

As we were reading we paid close attention to non-fiction features.

We listened for our inner voice to signal new learning: Wow! Amazing! Really? I didn't know that.......

They worked in pairs to discuss the text.

I enjoyed listening to their conversations.

Comprehension Toolkit

Today we identified informational text features and learned their purposes.

We also recognized signals from our inner voice that tells us we are learning something new as we read non-fiction text.

The boys and girls browsed through some non-fiction books.

As they browsed, they looked for some non-fiction features: captions, titles, headings, bold faced words, diagrams, labels, maps, close-up pictures, table of contents, etc.

They used post it notes to mark the features they found in their books.

Beauty and the Beast

We reread this week's story in groups today.

Some chose to listen to the story on a CD.

Others chose to take turns reading out loud with a group.

They did a good job reading together. I was proud of their behavior.
