Mmmmm.....Smores!

Friday night, we bundled up, started a fire, and cooked some smores! It was The Coons, The Burgreen kids, and The Smiths, my brother's family!

Principal for the Day

Hannah Grace Dorr, the daughter of one of my dear friends, got to be "principal for the day." This was one of the items that was up for bid at the silent auction at fall festival. I tried to get her to give me the day off, but she would not hear of such!!!

4th grade play

The whole school met in the theater today to watch the 4th graders present a play. The play was on the SEVEN HABITS!

Putting It All Together

After a week of exploring, the children had to use their notes to identify all 5 unknown powders today! They became REAL chemists!

They worked really hard!

The five unknown powders consisted of alum, baby powder, cornstarch, baking soda, and sugar.

Wow! We did a lot with Chemical Testing this week.

Here is one sample from our water mixture/filtration test.

We ran our water mixtures (water and powder) through a coffee filter. We let the liquid fall into a little dish. After three days of sitting, we were able to see crystals!!

The boys and girls had to decide if the powder was separated through filtration or evaporation.

This was our meeting place everyday. I had to use a bullhorn to talk to them.

Here the children are watching to see if heat causes a chemical reaction with each powder.

We held a cupcake tin with a sample of each powder in it over a flame from a candle.

Mrs. Hardison and I both had a flame going for the students to see.

We experienced all kinds of stuff: yummy smells, yucky smells, crackling and popping, fizzing, color changes, etc.

Chemical Testing

We began our unit on Chemical Testing this morning in the cafeteria. The boys and girls were presented with 5 unknown powders . First they used their senses to observe the powders (physical properties).
Then, we performed the water test and the water mixture test to observe the powders' chemical properties.

As the children performed these tests, they were instructed to take good notes as they made observations.

Tomorrow we will meet again to perform 3 more tests!

Halloween Night

When I arrived at my in-laws' house in Point Mallard Estates, I was greeted by the sweet Laney family! What a surprise! They got a little taste of the craziness that goes on every Halloween at the Coon's house.
Austin and Ashley are ready to hit the streets for some candy! I am so glad they stopped by! What a TREAT for me!

Patton's 4th grade teacher and my running buddy, Lindsey Bowling, stopped by with her boyfriend, Ryan, to check out the chaos she has been warned about during our runs!

This is Patton as a scarecrow! The poor boy stood on this post for almost 3 hours trying to scare everyone who walked by. You would not believe the attention he got. Cameras were flashing everywhere! He was so proud!
