To go along with our IB unit, Changes, we spent Monday talking about the life cycle of a pumpkin.
We read Pumpkin Circle. |
After reading the book, the boys and girls had to put the events of a pumpkin's life cycle in the correct order. |
They thought it was neat that the cycle begins with a seed and ends with a seed. |
Next, we read How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? |
We observed our pumpkin before cutting it open. We made a list of adjectives that described it, measured it, weighed it, and predicted how many seeds we thought were in it. |
I wish you could have heard the squeals while cleaning out our pumpkin. |
They worked so hard to get every single seed. |
They could not believe how cold the pulp was. |
This is just some of the seeds. There were lots more to get out! |
Grayson's face is PRICELESS! |
Cameron is not sure he likes it?? |
We left them out overnight to dry, so we could count them on Tuesday. |
We discussed all the ways we could group our seeds to count them : ones, fives, tens, hundreds..... We agreed to put them in groups of ten. After the students could not agree on a total, we decided to group them by hundreds. This made it a lot easier to get an answer! We finally all agreed! |
Our pumpkin had 581 seeds! |
We are going to leave our pumpkin in the room over the next several weeks so we can observe and document the changes that take place.
